Stealing Naboth's Vineyard

Jezebel had Naboth murdered so Ahab could take his vineyard. The result was a severe judgment against Ahab and Jezebel's inheritance. The math points at a similar judgment over grapes in the book of Numbers.

1 Kings 21:1-24

1It came to pass after these things that Naboth L Jeremiah 1:5 the Jezreelite had a vineyard in Jezreel on the side of the temple of Ahab king of Samaria. A 1 Corinthians 9:7 2Ahab spoke to Naboth saying, Give me your vineyard that I may have it for an herb garden, because it is near to my house, and I will give you for it a better vineyard than it, or if it seems good to you, I will give you its worth in silver. 1 Kings 21:1-23Naboth said to Ahab, The Master forbids that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers. A Hebrews 12:16 1 Kings 21:34Ahab went to his house sad and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him FE for he had said, I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers. He laid down on his bed and turned his face away and would not eat food. 1 Kings 21:45Jezebel his wife came to him and said to him, Why is your spirit so sad that you refuse to eat food? 1 Kings 21:56He said to her, Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, Give me your vineyard for silver or else if it please you I will give you another vineyard for it better than it, but he answered, I will not give you my vineyard. 1 Kings 21:67Jezebel his wife FE said to him, Are you really king over Israel? Arise and eat bread and let your heart be merry. I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite. 1 Kings 21:78She wrote a letter in the name of Ahab and sealed it with his ring and sent the letter to the elders and nobles who lived in the city with Naboth. I Isaiah 10:1-2 9She wrote in the letter saying: 1 Kings 21:8-9Proclaim a fast and set Naboth on high among the people. 10Bring 2 wicked men and set them opposite him and let them testify against him saying, Naboth has reviled god and the king. Q Exodus 22:28 Then take him out and stone him that he may die. Q Leviticus 24:16 1 Kings 21:9-1011The men of his city, the elders and nobles who lived in the city with Naboth, did as Jezebel had sent to them and as it was written in the letter which she had sent to them. 12They proclaimed a fast and set Naboth on high among the people. 13They brought 2 wicked men and seated them opposite him and the wicked men witnessed against Naboth saying, Naboth reviled god and the king. Then they took him outside the city and stoned him so that he died. M Acts 6:11 A Jacob 5:6 1 Kings 21:11-1314They sent to Jezebel saying, Naboth has been stoned and is dead. 1 Kings 21:14FE 15When Jezebel heard that Naboth was dead Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, inherit the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite which he refused to give you for silver, for Naboth is not alive but dead. A Micah 4:4 16When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite to inherit it. 1 Kings 21:15-1617The word of the Master was on Elijah who was from Tishbe saying, 18Arise. Go down to meet Ahab king of Israel in Samaria. He is in the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, for he has gone there to inherit it. 19You will say to him, The Master says, You have killed and you have also inherited. A Jeremiah 2:34 A Matthew 21:38 A Mark 12:7 A Luke 20:14 The Master says, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth dogs will also lick your blood. H 1 Kings 22:38 1 Kings 21:17-19FE 20Ahab said to Elijah, Have you found me my enemy? 1 Kings 21:20He answered, I have found you because you have exalted yourself to do evil before the Master. 21I will bring evil on you and will pluck your posterity and will cut off from Ahab every male child and everyone who has authority in governing Israel. 22I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha son of Ahijah for the provocation with which you have provoked me to anger and made Israel to sin. 1 Kings 21:20-2223Of Jezebel the Master also spoke saying, The dogs will eat Jezebel by the wall which is in Jezreel. Q 2 Kings 9:36 1 Kings 21:23FE 24Anyone belonging to Ahab who dies in the city the dogs will eat and anyone who dies in the field the birds of the air will eat. 1 Kings 21:24 (1 Kings 21:1-24 BRB)

Numbers

1The Master spoke with Moses and said to him, 2Send men that they may spy out the land of Canaan that I give to the children of Israel, 1 man from the tribe of his fathers. Send all the heads who are among them. Numbers 13:1-23Moses sent them FE from the wilderness of Paran by the commandment of the Master, all of those men who were heads of Israel. 4These were their names: Numbers 13:3-4From the tribe of Reuben Shammua son of Zaccur. Numbers 13:15FE 16These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. Numbers 13:16aMoses called Hosea son of Nun, Joshua. K Daniel 5:5 A Luke 2:21 Numbers 13:16b17Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, FE Go up this way into the south and go up on the mountain. 18See what the land is and the people who live in it, whether they are strong or weak, few or many, 19and what the land is in which they live, whether it is fertile or poor, or whether it has trees in it or not. 20Be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land. FE Now the time was the time of the firstfruits of grapes. Numbers 13:17-2021They went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob which is at the entrance of Hamath. 22They went up into the south and came as far as Hebron where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, children of Anak, were. Now Hebron was built 7 years before Zoan in Mizraim. 23They came as far as the valley of Eshcol and cut down from there a branch with 1 bunch of grapes and they carried it between 2 of them on a pole and they brought some pomegranates and some figs. 24That place was called, The valley of Eshcol, because of the bunch of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from there. Numbers 13:21-2425They returned from spying out the land after 40 days. 26They came to Moses FE and Aaron and to all the assembly of the children of Israel FE to the wilderness of Paran to Rakem. They brought back word to them and to all the assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. FE 27They related to Moses and said, We went to the land to which you sent us. Surely it flows with milk and honey and this is the fruit of it. 28The people who live in the land are strong and the cities are fortified and very great and also we saw the children of Anak there. 29The Amalekites live in the land of the south and the Hethites and the Jebusites and the Amorites live in the mountains and the Canaanites live by the sea and by the banks of the Jordan. Numbers 13:25-2930Then Caleb stilled the people before Moses and said, Let us go up at once and inherit it for we are well able to overcome it. Numbers 13:3031The men who went up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people for they are stronger than we. Numbers 13:3132They brought to the children of Israel an evil report of the land which they had spied out saying, The land through which we have gone to spy out is a land that devours its inhabitants and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature. FE 33We saw giants there, the children of Anak from the giants. We were in their sight like grasshoppers and so we were in their eyes. Numbers 13:32-33 1Then all the assembly was in commotion and lifted up their voices and cried and the people wept that night. 2All the children of Israel murmured against Moses FE and against Aaron and all the assembly said FE to them, Would god we had died in the land of Mizraim or would god we had died in this wilderness. 3Why has the Master brought us into this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and our little ones should be prey? We were better off when we lived in Mizraim. Numbers 14:1-34They said to each other, Let us make to ourselves a head and we will return to Mizraim. Numbers 14:4FE 5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembled of the assembly of the children of Israel. 6Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh from the spies of the land tore their clothes. 7They said to all the assembly of the children of Israel, The land through which we passed to spy is a very good land. 8If the Master delights in us he will bring us to this land and give this land to us FE that flows with milk and honey. 9Only do not rebel against the Master nor be afraid from the people of the land, because they are our bread, for their strength has passed from them and the Master is with us. You will not be afraid from them. Numbers 14:5-910The whole assembly said to stone them with stones. A Hebrews 12:3 FE The glory of the Master appeared in the cloud in the tent of time before all the children of Israel. 11The Master said to Moses, FE How long will this people provoke me? How long will they not believe me, for all the signs which I have done among them? 12I will strike them with pestilence, and destroy them, and I will make you a people which is greater and mightier than they. Numbers 14:10-1213Moses said to the Master, Then the Mizraim will hear it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, 14and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land, for they have heard that the Master is in the middle of this people, that the Master is seen face to face, and that your cloud stands over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15If you will kill all this people as 1 man, then the peoples who have heard the fame of you will say, 16Because the Master was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness. Numbers 14:13-1617Now let your power, master, be great as you spoke saying, 18The Master is long-suffering and of great mercy, and you forgive iniquity and transgression, by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and on the children's children to the 3rd and 4th generation. 19Pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your mercy, as you have forgiven them from Mizraim even until now. Numbers 14:17-1920The Master said to Moses, I have forgiven them according to your word, 21but as truly as I live the whole land will be filled with the glory of the Master. 22Yet all the men who have seen my glory and the signs which I did in Mizraim and in the wilderness have tempted me now these 10 times, and have not listened to my voice; 23surely they will not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither will any of those who provoked me see it; 24but my servant Caleb, because he has my spirit with him and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went; and his seed will inherit it. 25The Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the mountains. Tomorrow turn and set out for the wilderness by the way of the sea of Reeds. Numbers 14:20-2526The Master spoke with Moses and with Aaron and said to them, 27How long will this wicked assembly murmur in my presence? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel which they murmur in my presence. 28Say to them, The Master says, As I live, as you spoke in my presence, so I will do to you. 29Your corpses will fall in this wilderness and all that were numbered of you according to your whole number from 20 years old and upward, because you have murmured against me. 30You will not come into the land concerning which I swore to make you live except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. 31Your little ones who you said would become prey and your children who today do not know good and evil will enter into the land and I will bring them there and they will know the land which you have despised. 32As for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness. 33Your children will be shepherds 40 years in this wilderness H Acts 7:36 and will suffer for your prostitution until your corpses are consumed in this wilderness. H Jude 1:5 A 2 Corinthians 6:5 34According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even 40 days, a year for each day, you will suffer for your iniquities, 40 years A Hebrews 12:2 FE , then you will know that it is because you have murmured before me. 35I the Master have said, I will surely do it to all this evil assembly that are gathered together before me. In this wilderness they will be consumed and there they will die. Numbers 14:26-3536The men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the assembly murmur against him by publishing an evil report concerning the land, 37these men who published an evil report of the land died by a plague before the Master, 38but Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were of the men who went to spy out the land, still lived. Numbers 14:36-3839Moses told these sayings to all the children of Israel and the people mourned greatly. FE 40They rose up early in the morning, and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, We will go up to the place which the Master has promised us, for we have sinned. Numbers 14:39-4041Moses said to them, Why now do you transgress the commandment of the Master, therefore you will not succeed. 42Do not go up, for the Master is not with you, lest you be defeated before your enemies, 43for the Canaanites and the Amalekites are there before you, and you will fall by the sword, because you are turned away from following the Master, therefore the Master will not be with you. Numbers 14:41-4344Yet they started to go up to the top of the mountain, but neither the ark of the contract of the Master, nor Moses, departed out of the camp. 45Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that mountain came down and struck them and pursued them as far as Hormah. Numbers 14:44-45 (Numbers 13:1-14:45 BRB)

It's a long story, but note in this case the people were supposed to kick out the inhabitants of the land and eat of their vineyards, but they would not obey the voice of Yahvah. When Joshua and Caleb spoke up to sway the people the people wanted to stone them just as Jezebel had Naboth stoned for standing upon his rightful inheritance. Fortunately Yahvah intervened and preserved Joshua and Caleb, but he pronounced a 40 year judgment on the people and made them to wander in the wilderness instead of helping them enter into their new land. He also put to death the spies who spread the faithless report.

With the Jezebel and Ahab story as background, it's likely that there was some collusion behind the scenes in this story to take the inheritance from the people. They could have just walked in and Yahvah would have fought for them, but they robbed themselves, and worse, their kids, of this blessing for 40 years.

Eventually this crew did take the land and each tribe and clan received their inheritance by lot. It was on this history that Naboth stood against the king, and it was their dismissal of this history upon which Jezebel and Ahab wrecked their own inheritance for future generations.
