Isaiah John
Isaiah chapter 40 covers the Messengers from Jerusalem,
Prepare the Way, Jesus' Baptism, The Dove, Jesus Calling Disciples, and
Nathanael Under the Fig Tree stories in the Gospel of John.
1.1Comfort, comfort my people,
1.2says your God.
2.1Speak comfortably to Jerusalem,
2.2and cry to her,
2.3for she was filled with violence
2.4and delighted in sin;
2.5and she has received from the Master's hand
2.6double punishment for all her sins.
Isaiah 40:1-23.1The voice of him who cries:
3.2In the wilderness
3.3return the way to the Master
3.4and make straight in the plain
3.5a highway to our God. Q Matthew 3:3 Q Mark 1:3 P John 1:23 S Isaiah 49:11 S Luke 1:76
4.1Every valley will be raised up
4.2and every mountain and hill will be made low,
4.3and the rough ground will be made level
4.4and the rugged places a plain,
5.1and the glory of the Master will be revealed
5.2and all flesh will see it together,
5.3for the mouth of the Master has spoken. Q Luke 3:4-6
Isaiah 40:3-56.1The voice says, Cry.
6.2He said, What will I cry?
6.3All flesh is grass
6.4and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.
7.1The grass withers and the flower fades,
7.2because the breath of the Master blows on it.
7.3Thus is the grass of this people.
8.1The grass withers and the flower fades
8.2and the word of God stands to eternity. Q 1 Peter 1:24
Isaiah 40:6-8 9.1Zion that brings good news
9.2get up on the high mountain;
9.3Jerusalem that brings good news
9.4lift up your voice with strength;
9.5lift it up, do not be afraid;
9.6say to the cities of Judah,
9.7Look, your God.
10.1The Master God will come with might,
10.2and his arm with strength;
10.3his reward is with him,
10.4and his work before him.
11.1He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
11.2he will gather the lambs with his arm
11.3and carry them in his embrace,
11.4and will feed again those who nurse.
Isaiah 40:9-1112.1Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand
12.2and meted out the skies with a span
12.3and gathered the dust of the land in a measure
12.4and weighed the mountains in scales
12.5and the hills in a balance?
13.1Who has directed the Spirit of the Master,
13.2or who has been to him a counsellor? P Romans 11:34 P 1 Corinthians 2:16
14.1With whom did he take counsel,
14.2and who instructed him and made him understand the path of justice
14.3and taught him knowledge
14.4and showed him the way of understanding?
Isaiah 40:12-14 15.1The peoples are like a drop out of a bucket,
15.2and are counted as the dipping of the balance;
15.3the islands will be cast away like fine dust.
16.1Lebanon is not sufficient for the fuel,
16.2nor its animals sufficient for a burnt offering.
17.1All peoples before him are as nothing;
17.2and they are counted to him for destruction and the sword.
Isaiah 40:15-1718.1To whom, then, will you liken God,
18.2or to what likeness will you compare him?
19.1Is he an image which the craftsman has made
19.2and the goldsmith has overlaid with gold
19.3and fastened with silver chains?
20.1He selects a tree that is not worm-eaten;
20.2then chooses a craftsman,
20.3who fashions it with his skill,
20.4to make an image that will not be moved.
Isaiah 40:18-2021.1Have you not heard?
21.2Have you not known?
21.3Has it not been told you from the beginning?
21.4Have you not understood from the foundations of the land?
22.1It is he who sits on the circle of the land,
22.2and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
22.3who stretches out the skies as a curtain
22.4and spreads them as a tent to live in;
23.1who brings princes to nothing;
23.2and makes the judges of the land as if they were nothing.
24.1Yes, they will not be planted;
24.2yes, they will not be sown;
24.3yes, their stock will not take root in the land;
24.4and he will blow on them and they will wither,
24.5and the whirlwind will take them away as stubble.
Isaiah 40:21-2425.1To whom will you liken me,
25.2or to whom will I be equal, says the holy one.
26.1Lift up your eyes on high and look.
26.2Who has created these things?
26.3Who brings out their host by number?
26.4He called them all by name,
26.5by the greatness of his glory and the strength of his power;
26.6not one is missing.
Isaiah 40:25-2627.1Why do you say, Jacob,
27.2and say, Israel,
27.3My way is hidden from the Master
27.4and justice is not rendered by my God?
28.1Have you not known,
28.2have you not heard,
28.3that God is forever?
28.4The Master has created the ends of the land,
28.5he does not faint, nor does he weary,
28.6and there is no searching his understanding.
29.1He gives power to the weary,
29.2and to those who are struck with disease he increases strength.
30.1Even the youths will faint and be weary,
30.2and the young men will helplessly stumble;
31.1but they who wait for the Master
31.2will renew their strength;
31.3they will grow wings as a dove;
31.4they will run and not be weary;
31.5they will walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:27-31 (Isaiah 40 BRB)
Isaiah says Speak comfortably to Jerusalem.
This
aligns with John the Baptist speaking to the messengers sent
to him from Jerusalem
(John 1:19).
Isaiah says The voice of him who cries in the wilderness,
Prepare the way of Yahvah, make straight in the desert a highway
for our god.
This aligns with John the Baptist quoting this
same passage to explain his call
(John 1:20-28).
Isaiah says Zion, that brings good news, get up on the
high mountain; Jerusalem, that brings good news, lift up your
voice with strength; lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the
cities of Judah, Look, your god.
This aligns with John the
Baptist saying "Look, the lamb of god, who takes away the sin
of the world"
(John 1:29).
Isaiah says Who has measured the waters in the hollow of
his hand and meted out the skies with a span and gathered the
dust of the land in a measure and weighed the mountains in
scales and the hills in a balance?
This aligns with the
baptism of Jesus
(John 1:30-31).
Isaiah says Who has directed the spirit of Yahvah or who
has been to him a counsellor?
This aligns with the holy
spirit descending upon Jesus at his baptism
(John 1:32-34).
Isaiah says He called them all by name, by the greatness
of his glory and the strength of his power; not 1 is missing.
This aligns with Jesus calling his disciples
(John 1:35-42).
Isaiah says Why do you say, Jacob, and say, Israel, My
way is hidden from Yahvah and justice is not rendered by my
god?
This aligns with Jesus seeing Nathanael under the
fig tree
(John 1:43-51).
