Isaiah John
Isaiah chapter 40 covers the Messengers from Jerusalem,
Prepare the Way, Jesus' Baptism, The Dove, Jesus Calling Disciples, and
Nathanael Under the Fig Tree stories in the Gospel of John.
FE 1Comfort, comfort my people, says your god.
2Speak comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry to her, for she was filled with violence and delighted in sin; and she has received from the Master's hand double punishment for all her sins.
Isaiah 40:1-23The voice of him who cries: In the wilderness return the way to the Master and make straight in the plain a highway to our god. Q Matthew 3:3 Q Mark 1:3 Q John 1:23 S Luke 1:76
4Every valley will be raised up and every mountain and hill will be made low, and the rough ground will be made level and the rugged places a plain,
5and the glory of the Master will be revealed and all flesh will see it together, for the mouth of the Master has spoken. Q Luke 3:4-6
Isaiah 40:3-56The voice says, Cry. He said, What will I cry? Isaiah 40:6All flesh is grass and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.
7The grass withers and the flower fades, because the breath of the Master blows on it. Thus is the grass of this people.
8The grass withers and the flower fades and the word of god stands to eternity. Q 1 Peter 1:24
Isaiah 40:6-89Zion that brings good news get up on the high mountain; Jerusalem that brings good news lift up your voice with strength; lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the cities of Judah, Look, your god.
10The Master God will come with might, and his arm with strength; his reward is with him, and his work before him.
11He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs with his arm and carry them in his embrace, and will feed again those who nurse.
Isaiah 40:9-1112Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and meted out the skies with a span and gathered the dust of the land in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?
13Who has directed the spirit of the Master, or who has been to him a counsellor? P Romans 11:34 P 1 Corinthians 2:16
14With whom did he take counsel, and who instructed him and made him understand the path of justice and taught him knowledge and showed him the way of understanding?
Isaiah 40:12-1415The peoples are like a drop out of a bucket, and are counted as the dipping of the balance; the islands will be cast away like fine dust.
16Lebanon is not sufficient for the fuel, nor its animals sufficient for a burnt offering.
17All peoples before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him for destruction and the sword.
Isaiah 40:15-1718To whom then will you liken god, or to what likeness will you compare him?
19Is he an image which the craftsman has made and the goldsmith has overlaid with gold and fastened with silver chains?
20He selects a tree that is not worm-eaten; then chooses a craftsman, who fashions it with his skill, to make an image that will not be moved.
Isaiah 40:18-2021Have you not heard? Have you not known? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the land?
22It is he who sits on the circle of the land, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the skies as a curtain and spreads them as a tent to live in;
23who brings princes to nothing; and makes the judges of the land as if they were nothing.
24Yes, they will not be planted; yes, they will not be sown; yes, their stock will not take root in the land; and he will blow on them and they will wither, and the whirlwind will take them away as stubble.
Isaiah 40:21-2425To whom will you liken me, or to whom will I be equal, says the holy one.
26Lift up your eyes on high and look. Who has created these things? Who brings out their host by number? He called them all by name, by the greatness of his glory and the strength of his power; not one is missing.
Isaiah 40:25-2627Why do you say, Jacob, and say, Israel, My way is hidden from the Master and justice is not rendered by my god?
28Have you not known, have you not heard, that god is forever? The Master has created the ends of the land, he does not faint, nor does he weary, and there is no searching his understanding.
29He gives power to the weary, and to those who are struck with disease he increases strength.
30Even the youths will faint and be weary, and the young men will helplessly stumble;
31but they who wait for the Master will renew their strength; they will grow wings as a dove; they will run and not be weary; they will walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:27-31 (Isaiah 40 BRB)
Isaiah says Speak comfortably to Jerusalem.
This
aligns with John the Baptist speaking to the messengers sent
to him from Jerusalem
(John 1:19).
Isaiah says The voice of him who cries in the wilderness,
Prepare the way of Yahvah, make straight in the desert a highway
for our god.
This aligns with John the Baptist quoting this
same passage to explain his call
(John 1:20-28).
Isaiah says Zion, that brings good news, get up on the
high mountain; Jerusalem, that brings good news, lift up your
voice with strength; lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the
cities of Judah, Look, your god.
This aligns with John the
Baptist saying "Look, the lamb of god, who takes away the sin
of the world"
(John 1:29).
Isaiah says Who has measured the waters in the hollow of
his hand and meted out the skies with a span and gathered the
dust of the land in a measure and weighed the mountains in
scales and the hills in a balance?
This aligns with the
baptism of Jesus
(John 1:30-31).
Isaiah says Who has directed the spirit of Yahvah or who
has been to him a counsellor?
This aligns with the holy
spirit descending upon Jesus at his baptism
(John 1:32-34).
Isaiah says He called them all by name, by the greatness
of his glory and the strength of his power; not 1 is missing.
This aligns with Jesus calling his disciples
(John 1:35-42).
Isaiah says Why do you say, Jacob, and say, Israel, My
way is hidden from Yahvah and justice is not rendered by my
god?
This aligns with Jesus seeing Nathanael under the
fig tree
(John 1:43-51).
