Isaiah Philemon

Isaiah chapter 58 covers the Exhortation to Receive Onesimus passage in the epistle to Philemon.

FE 1Cry aloud, do not spare, lift up your voice like a trumpet and show my people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins. 2Yet they seek me daily and wish to know my ways, as a people that did righteousness, and did not forsake the judgment of their god; they ask of me judgment and righteousness; they take delight in drawing near to god. 3Why have we fasted, and you do not see it? Why have we afflicted ourselves, and you take no notice? Isaiah 58:1-3In the day of your fast you do what you wish, and you present offerings to all of your idols. 4You fast for strife and quarreling, and to strike violently with the fist of wickedness; you will not fast as you do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high. 5Is it such a fast that I have chosen? A day for a man to afflict his soul, to bow down his head like a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the Master? Isaiah 58:3-56This is the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, to cut off the bands of treachery, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke; 7to share your bread with the hungry, and to bring the stranger to your house; when you see the naked, to cover him; and to not refuse one of your own flesh. 8Then your light will break forth as the morning and your righteousness will spring forth speedily; and your righteousness will go before you; the glory of the Master will be your reward. 9Then you will call, and the Master will answer you; you will cry, and he will say, Here I am. Isaiah 58:6-9If you remove deceit from your middle and release the prisoners and cease speaking falsehood; 10and give your bread to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then your light will shine in darkness, and your darkness be as the noonday; 11and the Master will guide you continually and satisfy your soul with rich food; and strengthen your bones; and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring whose water does not fail. 12Some of you will build the old waste places; you will raise up the foundations of many generations; and you will be called The repairer of the breaches, the restorer of paths to live in. Isaiah 58:9-1213If you turn away your foot from the sabbath, from doing your pleasures on my holy day; and call the sabbath, A delight, the holy of the Master, Honorable; and will honor it, not doing on it your own ways, nor doing on it your own pleasure, nor speaking idle words; 14then you will put your trust in the Master; and I will cause you to ride on the high places of the land and feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father; for the mouth of the Master has spoken it. Isaiah 58:13-14 (Isaiah 58 BRB)

Isaiah says This is the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to cut off the bands of treachery, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke; to share your bread with the hungry, and to bring the stranger to your house; when you see the naked, to cover him; and to not refuse one of your own flesh. In the letter to Philemon Paul urges him to let Onesimus live with him. Onesimus was related to Philemon, but something had happened in the past and he met Paul and was converted in prison, but now was going home to Philemon, if he would receive him (Phlm 1:15-16).

The Sabbath reference relates to the "congregation" that met in Philemon's house (Phlm 1:1-2).
