Isaiah Galatians
Isaiah 51:1-8 and the epistle of Galatians.
1.1Listen to me, you who follow after righteousness,
1.2you who seek the Master;
1.3look to the rock from which you were hewn,
1.4and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug.
2.1Look to Abraham your father,
2.2and to Sarah who conceived you;
2.3for he was alone, and I called him
2.4and blessed him and multiplied him.
3.1For the Master will build Zion;
3.2he will build all her waste places;
3.3he will make her wilderness like Eden,
3.4and her plain like the garden of the Master;
3.5joy and gladness will be heard in the middle of her,
3.6thanksgiving and the voice of singing.
Isaiah 51:1-34.1Listen to me, people;
4.2and give ear to me, peoples;
4.3for a law will go forth from me,
4.4and my justice is a light to the peoples.
5.1My righteousness is near;
5.2my salvation is gone forth
5.3and my arms will judge the peoples;
5.4the islands will wait for me
5.5and on my arm they will trust.
6.1Lift up your eyes to the skies,
6.2and also look on the land beneath;
6.3for the skies will vanish away like smoke,
6.4and the land will wear out like a garment,
6.5and they who live in it will perish in like manner;
6.6but my salvation will be forever,
6.7and my righteousness will not pass away.
Isaiah 51:4-67.1Listen to me, you who know righteousness,
7.2the people in whose heart is my law;
7.3do not fear the disgrace of men,
7.4nor be afraid of their revilings.
8.1For the moth will eat them up
8.2like wool and like a garment;
8.3but my righteousness will be forever
8.4and my salvation from generation to generation. Isaiah 51:7-8 (Isaiah 51:1-8 BRB)
Isaiah says to look to Abraham. This matches Paul's
discussion of Abraham.
1Foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you from your belief after Joshua the Messiah, crucified, has been pictured before your eyes?
2This I want to know from you only, did you receive the Spirit through the works of the law or through obedience to belief?
3Are you so foolish after having begun with spiritual things to end now with things of the flesh?
4Have you believed all these things in vain? I hope that it is to no purpose.
5Therefore, does he who gives you the Spirit and works miracles among you do these things by the works of the law or by obedience to belief?
Galatians 3:1-56Just as Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness, Q Genesis 15:6
7know, therefore, that those who are believers are the children of Abraham.
8Because God knew in advance that the peoples would be declared righteous through belief, he 1st preached to Abraham, as it is said in the holy writing, In you all the peoples will be blessed. Q Genesis 12:3
9Therefore, it is the believers who are blessed through Abraham the believer,
10for those who rely on the works of the law are still under the curse, for it is written, Cursed is everyone who does not practice everything which is written in this law, Q Deuteronomy 27:26
11but that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for it is written, The righteous will live by belief. Q Habakkuk 2:4
12The law is not made by belief, but, Whoever will do the things which are written in it will live in it. Q Leviticus 18:5
13The Messiah has redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming accursed for our sakes, for it is written, Cursed is everyone who hangs on a cross, Q Deuteronomy 21:23
14that the blessing of Abraham might come on the peoples through Joshua the Messiah that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through belief. Galatians 3:6-14 (Galatians 3:1-14 BRB)
Isaiah says a law will go forth from Yahvah. This matches
the giving of the law discussed by Paul.
15My brothers, I speak as I would to an assembly of men. Though it be but a contract of man, yet if it be confirmed no man can reject it or change anything in it.
16The promises were made to Abraham and to his seed as a contract. He did not say, To your seeds, as in many, but, To your seed, Q Genesis 12:7 as in 1, he who is the Messiah.
17This I say, that the contract which was previously confirmed of God in the Messiah cannot be repudiated and the promise nullified by the law which came 430 years later,
18for if the inheritance is by the law then it would not be as the fulfillment of promise, but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
Galatians 3:15-1819Therefore, what is the use of the law? It was added because of transgression until the coming of the heir to whom the promise was made, and the law was given by kings by the hand of a mediator.
20A mediator does not represent 1 alone, but God is 1.
Galatians 3:19-2021Therefore, is the law against the promises of God? Far be it, for if a law had been given which could have given life, righteousness truly would have come as the result of the law,
22but the writing has included everything under sin that the promise by the belief of Joshua the Messiah might be given to those who believe,
23but before belief came we were guided by the law while we were waiting for the belief which was to be revealed.
24The law, then, was our pathfinder to bring us to the Messiah that we might be justified by belief,
25but since belief has come we no longer are in need of the pathfinder,
Galatians 3:21-25 26for you are all children of God by belief in Joshua the Messiah,
27for those who have been baptized in the name of the Messiah have been clothed with the Messiah.
28There is neither Jew nor Aramean, there is neither servant nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all 1 in Joshua the Messiah.
29If you belong to the Messiah then you are children of Abraham and his heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:26-29 (Galatians 3:15-29 BRB)
Isaiah says not to fear the disgrace of men. This matches
Paul's discussion of Ishmael.
12My brothers, I beg you, put yourself in my place just as I once put myself in your place. You have not offended me at all.
13You know that I was weak in my flesh when I preached the thinking to you at 1st,
14yet you did not despise me nor reject me on account of my weakness, but you received me as a king of God, even as Joshua the Messiah.
15Where then is the blessedness you had, for I can testify concerning you that if it had been possible you would have plucked out your own eyes and given them to me.
16Have I become an enemy to you because I told you the truth?
Galatians 4:12-1617These men do not emulate you for good, but they want to dominate you that you might emulate them,
18but it is good that you should always envy after good things, and not only when I am present with you.
19My sons, for whom I am in travail again until the Messiah be a reality in you,
20I wish I could be with you now and change the tone of my voice, because I am deeply concerned about you.
Galatians 4:17-2021Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law,
22for it is written that Abraham had 2 sons, 1 by a maidservant and 1 by a free woman,
23yet he who was born of the maidservant was born after the flesh, yet he who was born of the free woman was born by promise,
24but these things are a symbol of the 2 contracts. The one from Mount Sinai gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar,
25for Hagar is the mount of Sinai in Arabia, and surrenders to Jerusalem, which now is, and is in bondage with her children,
26but, the Jerusalem which is above, is free, and is the mother of us all,
27.1for it is written:
27.2Make merry you barren who do not bear,
27.3rejoice and cry you who do not travail,
27.4for the children of the desolate are more numerous
27.5than the children of the wife. Q Isaiah 54:1
Galatians 4:21-2728We, my brothers, are the children of promise, as was Isaac.
29As then, he who was born after the flesh persecuted him who was born after the Spirit, so even now,
30yet what does the writing say, Cast out the maidservant and her son, for the son of the maidservant will not inherit with the son of the free woman. Q Genesis 21:10
31We, therefore, my brothers, are not children of the female servant, but children of the free woman. Galatians 4:28-31 (Galatians 4:12-31 BRB)
